Portraits of Roma Children in Hungary: Glimpses of Resilience
This portrait series features Roma children from Hungary, from disadvantaged backgrounds and currently under the care of specialized foster families. These young people have been placed under the protection of the Hungarian state after experiencing profound trauma – family violence, neglect, or exposure to addiction in their original family environment.
Despite their difficult journey, these children rediscover hope and joy each year during vacation camps organized specifically for them. These special moments offer them the opportunity to experience normal childhood activities, build connections with their peers, and develop their self-confidence.
Through these portraits, I wanted to capture not only their vulnerability, but above all their remarkable inner strength. Each gaze reveals a unique story, marked by pain but also by an extraordinary capacity to overcome adversity. These faces bear witness to human resilience and remind us of the crucial importance of protecting childhood and providing every child with the care and love they need to flourish.
This gallery is a tribute to their courage and a call for solidarity with the most vulnerable children in our society.
